Background

In the end of 1984 when Volvo and Rudi Eggenberger, head of Swiz Eggenberger Motorsport, had signed a contract, that Eggenberger Motorsport was to mangage Volvos first Factoryteam in 1985.

Things like this was a part of the contract:

- To prepare and to build two brand new race ready Volvo 240 cars.

- To setup tests and testdrivnings and so on.

Anyway, Eggenberger received two brand new and empty Volvo 240 chassis from Volvo in Sweden. This two chassis was to be the cars that Eggenberger was to manage in ETC 1985.

This car, as in the photos, got chassisnumber #502, to explain the number, the no. 5 stod for the year of production and the no. 02 stod for the production number of the car. The car was built from scratch by Eggenbergers mechanics, with influens from father and son, Tage and Thomas Lindström.

The Belgian Pierre Diuedonné and the West-German Siegfried Müller Jr. was to drive this car, amolst throughout the whole season the car had no. 11 on the side. The team was also succesful in Japan and Macau, China and not only in Europe.

But Gianfranco was to drive the #501 and Thomas Lindström was to drive the #502 at Macau.

At the end of 1985 Volvo ended the partnership with Eggenberger, and in came the Belgian company RAS Sport (Ring Auto Sport). The cars was recalled back to Sweden and shipped to Belgium and RAS Sport's premises for dismantling. The cars was thoroughly looked over, to see that nothing was wrong with the chassis. The cars was put together again and updated according to last specification made in 1986, the car also got a new chassisnumber, and was now the #602. After this it was the straight way to the testingtracks, and to see how the drivers would to.

The only driver that stayed from 1985 was Thomas Lindström, other drivers like Swedes Ulf Granberg and Anders Olofsson and Venezuelan Johnny Cecotto now stepped in to do the work as the drivers. However the #602 car was built for Granberg/Olofsson. Later on, again after the season, Volvo went to Japan to race at Fuji Speedway, and now Anders Olofsson and Johnny Cecotto was paired up to drive and Thomas Lindström and Ulf Granberg paired up, and furhter on at Macau Lindström drove the #601 by himself.  And as many of you all know by now, Volvo withdrew from motorsport and group-A completley in 1986. And the #602 was shipped back to Volvo Motorsport in Sweden, where it was ordered to scrap the #602 as the car no longer had any purpose. During the year the rumors have flourished that these cars was not scrapped but sold off and are still on the move. However the facts tells an other story, neither the #602 nor the #601 remains today, as informed the cars was scrapped.
