Background

Late in 1982 Swede Thomas Lindström (with his father Tage Lindström) built his first Volvo 240 Turbo Group-A, the TL 2401, he was aiming for the class over 2500cc in Group-A, ETC. Important to know and to mention that this is one of the first Volvo 240 Turbo ever built to compete with in the ETC. In the beginning the TL 2401 was equipped with the old GLT-front, later on changing to the so called "flathood front", which made the car a little bit more aerodyna- mic. And from the start of ETC 1983 the TL 2401 was not equipped with the rear Group-A spoiler, the spoiler was not homologated until the end of the season -83. Lindström also drove the car fitted with the USA-front (other model of headlights), but later on also the USA-headlights was changed to the European-headlights. Another interesting detail is the centre hubs; they were bolted onto the original 5-bolt hub. Thomas explained that this was necessary when racing in the ETC! "-At this moment we had to manufacture our own centre hubs since Volvo at this present time hadn't started to produce and manufacture racing parts until early 1984" -A comment made by Thomas Lindström himself.

However, Thomas took the TL 2401 to compete in the Nordic Championship in -83, a championship that was to be raced in three different countries: Sweden (at Anderstorp), Finland (at Ahvenisto) and in Denmark (Jylland Ring). With what you could almost describe, at ease, Thomas clinched the championship becoming nr one. These three races were was raced throug- hout the season, during that time between Thomas raced in the ETC with the TL 2401, from the start he co-drove with Swede Stanley Dickens (that he knew through his cousin Leif Lindström, he and Stanley had a commercial company called Dicklin Sport).

The Nordic Championship races Thomas drove himself but in the ETC races he drove the TL 2401 with Dickens, and they teamed up at following races: Monza - Italy (830320), Donington - England (830501), Brno - (In then) Czechoslovakia (830612) and at Zeltweg - Austria (830626). Not barley two weeks later at the famous German track, the Nürburgring GT (830707), Dickens had left the team and in came Swede (and former F3-driver) Anders Olofsson to take his place next to Thomas. Anders and Thomas shared the TL 2401 for three races only, the Nürburgring (as mentioned), Silverstone - England (830923) and at the final round at Zolder in Belgium (830925).

And after the season 1983 the TL 2401 was sold to Leif Wiik in Finland. In Finland Wiik was competing the whole season (year), both on gravel, ice and on tarmac with the TL 2401. It was used in a vast field of racing and rally, this was how Wiik used the TL 2401 in 1984, -85 and -86, and with good results. 1987 the initiative was taken and the "Volvo Team Finland" was formed, and the team consisted of none the less three Volvo 240 Turbo, Leif Wiik (ex. Volvo Works car, 604), Heikki Salmenautio (ex. IPS Motorsport, IPS8401, DTM Volvo 1983-84) and Juhani Koskinen (in TL 2401). They were all led by Wiiks friend Martti Hahl as team manager. In -87 Wiik crashed the 604 Volvo, and during the time it took to repair the chassis, as most of the rear had to be replaced, the parts were moved over to the TL 2401 chassis prior to the Finnish Championship 1988. Wiik used the TL 24 01 the three first races of the season of -88 before putting it to rest.

After the season of -88 Wiik sold the TL 2401 to one of the mechanics in his team, then the car was later on returned back to Sweden (I just don't know when and how exactly?). The man who brought the TL 2401 back to Sweden was Kjell Tuvesson, and he in his way took the TL 2401 to Steffansson Automotive (SAM), for some restoration and updates. In a later stage Steffansson (SAM) took over the TL 2401, how long time that flies by here I don't know either? After a big leap of time (about 11 years take or give), in 1998 Patrick Werner buys the in a later stage, he only owns it for about 6 month and in autumn of 1999 Werner sells the TL 2401 to Tommy Brink. After getting the TL 2401 home, and after looking over the car, Brink makes the decision of stripping the TL 2401 down, only keeping engine, gearbox, fuel injection system and the brakes. (These parts, from the TL 2401, are still on the rally car that Brink built from scratch).

But the chassis of the TL 2401 still remained however, and then at one moment Torbjörn Johansson stops by Brink and he buys the 1031-Volvo Motorsport (VMS) rear axle, Johansson also buys the front suspension from Brink. After stripping of the TL 2401 chassis, Brink fitted the old TL 2401 with an old front and rear suspension, and the centre bolt wheels and hubs, now the TL 2401 was a rolling chassis. And Brink put the rolling TL 2401 chassis for a while. The only thing that now remained on the chassis that was Group-A was the wheels, air jacks, the Rubi roll cage and some electrics wiring. In that state the TL 2401 was later sold to Torbjörn Svensson, and the following years to come the chassis shifts owners again, and the next owner was Johan Sigby. Now all that remains on the only old TL 2401 chassis is the Rubi roll cage and the old electric wiring, the rest of the parts had been stripped away. Sigby mostly used the TL 2401 on racetrack meetings, at one moment at the famous Swedish racetrack Kinnekulle Ring. The TL 2401 had once more been fitted with centre bolt wheels, (a new kind) but now we're talking about very expensive and light wheels from a Volvo S40 Super Touring, the hubs were made by Sigby himself! Sigby owns the chassis until 2006, and in -06 Pelle Nilsson calls Sigby, and telling Sigby that he is willing to buy the TL 2401 from Sigby. He feel that he don't have nor the money nor the time to restore the old TL 2401 chassis and makes the decision to sell the chassis to Nilsson (this after Nilsson had made a promise that he could fully restore the TL 2401 to its former glory).

The TL 2401 was sold as a rolling chassis (again), with the Rubi-roll cage still remaining and the old electric system to, but no doors, bonnet or trunk was included in the deal! So the chassis had went from being a very nicely built racecar to become a regular and almost anonymous road car, with the identity from a Volvo 242 1975. But then again, you could hardly call this car a common car, cause it’s not! When Pelle brought home the TL 2401 he made up plans, as mentioned, to restore the TL 2401. The chassis however needed some good old panel work done, now mind that this is a chassis that survived many years on the racetrack (gravel and ice) and on the streets...

Things like that doesn’t just go by without being noticed here and there on the TL 2401 chassis. In 2014 it was time, once more, for the TL 2401 chassis to change hands.

This time, from over the water the Swedish Vikings used to sail, there came a man from England. His name is Piers Slater. He made a bargain and sailed back home one Volvo richer! The TL 2401 chassis is now under going a full blown restoration, under the guarding eyes of Warren Heath (Warren Heath Motorsport - WHM) and he doesn't leave anything untouched. And the car stood ready and have been tested and raced at Goodwood in England now in 2017.
